Richard Reid & Associates has made a submission on Greater Wellington Regional Council’s plans for a Public Transport Spine through Wellington. We have reviewed the PT Spine Study as part of our ongoing assessment of NZTA’s Basin Bridge Proposal whose objectives include “providing opportunities for improving public transport”.

In our submission we note the PT Spine Study seeks wholesale changes which will re-define the city for generations to come. These require re-building the city’s transport infrastructure and significantly modifying streets and open spaces rather than maximising use of the existing network and residential catchment areas.

GWRC’s vision is closely aligned with NZTA’s proposed motorway upgrades. Our analysis shows both goals are achievable without a flyover or destroying key parts of the city. We recommend the study’s preferences not be advanced until their risks and effects are accurately assessed.
