Richard Reid has returned from a two month research trip to Spain and Portugal, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The focus for research was investigating the continuum between landform, urban design, architecture, public space and city infrastructure.

Of particular interest were places of real and sustained creativity – those cities which have succeeded with design as the generator for place and identity, at the same time as improving the city’s functioning and performance. Barcelona, Porto and Bilbao were standouts in this regard, while cities such as Madrid and Lisbon were planned beautifully in relation to landform. A highlight was meeting Professor Manuel de Solà-Morales in Barcelona.

The trip was partly funded by Arts Regional Trust Venture Programme for Creative Entrepreneurs.
