In 2019 Richard Reid & Associates was engaged to provide independent urban design advice to Devonport-Takapuna Local Board on the key requirements for creating a town square in Takapuna Metropolitan Centre.
Our report reviewed Auckland Council policies for civic space, development of Takapuna as an urban centre and options prepared by Eke Panuku for a town square. We established that these did not follow policy guidelines, a specific condition for development of the site.
We recommended a location, size and shape for a town square which did. We have refined this plan which continues to differ significantly from Eke Panuku’s proposed “corridor of reserve land”. We consider it will create an enduring civic centre for Takapuna.
