Our practice welcomes the opening of War Memorial Park in Wellington today.
We believe the outcome was significantly influenced by Richard Reid’s meeting with the Hon. Chris Finlayson, then the Minister of Culture and Heritage, in 2012. At this meeting, Richard stressed the importance of undergrounding Buckle Street in order to significantly improve the performance of the Basin Reserve Roundabout. The added benefit of this undergrounding is a traffic free commemorative park above.
Within a matter of weeks of the meeting, the Government directed NZTA to adopt this approach despite NZTA’s preference for Buckle Street to run overland through War Memorial Park. Today’s opening is another example of our multi-dimensional thinking - creating new public spaces at the same time as transport improvements for the city.
